My experiences with the Holy Spirit are frequently mentioned in my writings, as any devoted reader of my works will attest. In order to teach me about joy in the Lord, the Holy Spirit had to utilize an experience that I could relate to and understand.

I’ve recently found myself teaching several individuals to guard their joy and establish it in Jesus.

I’m sorry if I sound like a broken Christian record, but you should also hear this out. On an outing with a group of friends, a colleague of mine had a downcast look. When I questioned him, he admitted that he didn’t like the hangout and wished he was with his friends.

I asked him, “Does your joy come from this?” He retorted, “Nooo, but.”

“But nothing; your joy should be in the Lord.” Make your sense of fulfillment independent of external factors such as money, how an event turned out, a failed application, or people in your neighborhood. These things are ephemeral.

When you dim joy, you’ve also dimmed your own light, because joy is light. Nothing can take my joy away. In Christ, I have resolved. As a person, I might experience disappointment, but I won’t let it control how I live.

Therefore, dear reader, while I am not aware of the scope or complexity of your circumstance, I do know that “Jesus is your joy” if you allow him to be.

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in faith so that you overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13
