4 Hard Lessons I Learnt When I Joined LinkedIn (Social Media)
Navigating Social Media without losing your identity
I had to learn a hard lesson when I joined LinkedIn — I am in no “success or visibility race” with anyone. In fact, I remind myself of this every day.
LinkedIn (social media) can be overwhelming if you don’t know who you are or what you’re called to do. Here’s what I’ve learnt:
1. You’ll End Up Chasing Someone Else’s Dream
You will find yourself trying to do what every other successful person here is doing. This will frustrate you (because it’s hard to succeed in a space you’re not shaped to fit).
2. You’ll Rush Into Things You Aren’t Ready For
Social media can create pressure to achieve quickly, pushing you into roles or projects for which you haven’t yet built the capacity. My mentor, Ibukun Awosika, once said:
“Imagine you get the honour of the POSITION but lack the KNOWLEDGE to support the authority. You will EMBARRASS yourself and those who put you there.”
3. You’ll Compete Instead of Learning
Without clarity, you may compete with others instead of learning from them. Personally, I don’t believe in COMPETITION (in this context); I believe in PARTNERSHIP and MENTORSHIP.
The influencers in your niche aren’t your competition—they're your mentors, coaches, and teachers. They’ve made mistakes so you don’t have to. They have experience you can lean on to elevate yourself.
4. You’ll Waste Precious Time
Time is a gift. The time the Lord has prepared for your spotlight — where nations begin to reckon with your name and your gift, you would have wasted time, energy, and resources doing the wrong time.
An advice I give myself every day is this:
Praise, you’re not of yourself. You represent a kingdom. Your knowledge and expertise are to serve that kingdom. Fix your eyes on Jesus, he is the author and finisher of your life.
